Our justice system needs an overhaul; we need a system that prioritizes rehabilitation over incarceration, has sentencing that scales with the crime, and restitution that scales with the economic class of the accused. A millionaire should not be able to pay their way out of prison, a drug possession charge should not result in prison time.
We need to begin the process of abolishing for-profit private prisons, and working with local communities to ensure that the work of policing is done without bias. I will support any legislation that transfers resources away from private prisons and encourages states to transition to fully public non-profit prison systems.
